Next time you’re at a bar and someone asks “What’s your sign?” it might be more than a pick-up line. In fact, it may be a well-meaning attempt to help you select a drink you’ll enjoy based on your cosmic proclivities. Or at least that’s what author and sought-after pro astrologer Aliza Kelly Faragher is suggesting with her new book, The Mixology of
Faragher knows her way around a star chart, serving as the horoscope writer for Allure, Sanctuary, and Cheddar, and running a bustling private practice (including rumors of a celebrity-heavy clientele). Her style of astrology is less about esoteric detail, and more about helping humans find some meaning from the cosmos in an accessible, fun way. And, she thought, if your zodiac sign can provide guidance in your romantic and professional life, why not at the bar, too?
In The Mixology of Astrology, she picks out some key traits of each sign and finds a collection of cocktails that share those characteristics. A decadent Taurus might be drawn to a classic Champagne Cocktail, for example, while an adventurous Sagittarius might opt for a Caipirinha.
How did you discover astrology and decide to make it a career ?
I’ve always been interested in astrology. In many ways, my relationship with astrology predates my consciousness. When I was born, my uncle—a phenomenal student of the stars—mailed my mother a hand-calculated birth chart, illustrated with delicately detailed planets, symbols, and future predictions. My uncle passed when I was three years old, but throughout my life, I’ve continued to unravel the truth of my chart. I formally entered the astrology community in 2014, and began studying with my mentor Annabel Gat, soon thereafter.
Does it seem like there has been a sort of resurgence in interest in astrology in lately, perhaps particularly among millennial women?
Astrology has been popular for over 5,000 years–though mass appeal has waxed and waned based on the socio-political climate of an era. In my experience as a practicing astrologer, I can say with full confidence that public interest in mysticism has multiplied exponentially since the 2016 election. Simply put, when things are extra crazy on Earth, humans’ primordial instinct is to look up at the stars.
What inspired applying astrology analysis to cocktails?
I vehemently believe in demystifying the mystical, and likewise, practice an astrology that’s fun and accessible. Astrology can be applied to virtually anything, Delicious cocktails seemed like a perfect pairing!
How do make the connections between the traits associated with an astrological sign and the flavors and characteristics a person of that sign might be looking for in a drink?
My process for writing this book was to first focus on identifying the essence of each astrological sign, and then find cocktails that seamlessly capture each sign’s respective spirit—pun intended.
For instance, Virgo, an Earth sign, is known for being detail-oriented and utilitarian, though also a bit idealistic. Accordingly, Virgo cocktails emphasize fresh ingredients, exquisite craftsmanship, and precise proportions. Fiery Aries, on the other hand, are the first sign of the zodiac. Aries are always the life of the party, so Aries cocktails are defined by bold colors, rich flavors, and shameless reputations.
I’ve carefully curated 16 cocktails for each sign; the book features 192 cocktails total. There is truly something for everyone.
What is your own sign, and which of the drinks from your chapter is your personal favorite?
I’m a Leo, which means I’m playful, performative, and dramatic. The Leo cocktail is more than just a boozy beverage—it’s also a chic accessory. Celestial lions need drinks that look as good as they taste. My personal favorite is the classic Piña Colada. One part delicious and one part fabulous, Piña Coladas are the quintessential warm-weather libation and perfect for Leo season!
